Explore Monsal Dale in 360 degrees
Monsal Dale is one of the most popular scenic areas of the Peak District. Enjoy a virtual tour of the dale, including the famous viaduct and the historic Cressbrook.
This tour is a combination of aerial views and 360 degree photography. You can explore the views from Monsal Head over the famous Headstone Viaduct, as well as the banks of the River Wye at Cressbrook Dale and Water-cum-Jolly Dale.
The Headstone Viaduct is now a cherished part of the landscape, but it wasn't always thought of in positive terms. When it was built in 1856 it was considered to have spoiled the valley. For many years, it carried passengers on the Midlands Railway line between Bakewell and Buxton, before the line become victim to the cuts made by Dr Beeching. Nowadays, it has been transformed into a wonderful cycle route, where families can enjoy traffic free cycling through the historic tunnels and landscapes along the way. Our virtual tour includes views from the viaduct and even a look inside the Headstone Tunnel, where the walls are still lined with coal dust from the bygone era of steam trains. From the viaduct, we skip along to the area behind Cressbrook Mill, where the River Wye is formed into a mill pond which has become a haven for wildlife, as well as rock climbers taking on the challenge of the limestone cliffs, known as the Rubicon. See if you can spot a climber in a particularly perilous position on one of the photos!
